OEE for an MES pilot: fix the definitions first
Set consistent planned time, run time, cycle and count definitions before using MES OEE. Work the arithmetic and investigate impossible inputs.
Calculate availability, performance and quality from one consistent production interval.
Enter planned production minutes, actual run minutes, an agreed ideal cycle time in minutes per unit, total units produced and first-pass good units. Decide how planned breaks and changeovers are treated before collecting the data. Do not mix seconds with minutes. The tool rejects run time greater than planned time, good count greater than total count, and performance above 100%; investigate definitions or inputs rather than hiding an impossible result.
Availability = run time ÷ planned time. Performance = ideal cycle time × total units ÷ run time. Quality = good units ÷ total units. OEE is the product of these three ratios. The illustrative defaults give 87.5% availability, about 90.48% performance, 97.11% quality, and 76.875% OEE. These are not benchmark targets or a measured factory result.
OEE identifies loss categories; it does not directly value recovered capacity. A gain only becomes a financial benefit if the plant can use it, for example through avoided overtime or additional saleable output. Keep product mix, interval and loss definitions consistent when comparing periods. Zero denominators are undefined rather than evidence of zero effectiveness.
Siemens Insights Hub OEE standard formulas documents the multiplicative OEE relationship. This tool is independent of that product and uses the explicit interval and cycle-time definitions above.
